Episode 8:Jim Sweitzer, PhD /
Abducted to the Stars /
One August night in Michigan, when I was a boy scout enjoying the light of a campfire, I was abducted by “Indians” who ordered me to remain silent. They blindfolded me, marched me to an empty field and left. I was scared, but not for long. That night, the stars rescued me.
Removing my blindfold, the Milky Way dazzled overhead. The sky had never seemed so bright before. I didn’t know any constellations then, but eventually, I would know them all, even tiny Sagitta, Apollo’s Arrow. The stars comforted me and heralded an important summer ahead.
It was 1969. I was archery instructor in a Michigan camp on my last summer before university. Just a few weeks before, the Apollo 11 mission had landed the first astronauts on the Moon. My “kidnapping” was part of the Order of the Arrow, a Boy Scout “ordeal.” As it turns out, it was much more for me. It inspired me to eventually take degrees in physics and astrophysics.
I finally learned to name the constellations when I began my career at the Adler Planetarium. Since then, I’ve helped millions of people enjoy them. And, in 2000, as project director for the Rose Center planetarium in NYC, I was able to spend time with Neil Armstrong. That meeting made me feel a little closer to the stars — a climax to the journey that “launched” me into space back in a Michigan field in1969.
