Episode 9:Mark SubbaRao, PhD /
I grew up in Mendham New Jersey, only a one hour drive outside New Your City. It was a rural area with plenty of space between houses, so even though we were close to a major city, the sky would still get reasonably dark. I remember looking at the Moon and comparing it to images I has seen on TV from the Apollo Missions, and imagining what it would be like to travel there.
I learned how to spot the Big Dipper and to use the pointer stars to find Polaris. I convinced myself that I could count seven stars in the Pleiades. After I was told that Planets didn’t twinkle the way stars do, I learned to find Jupiter, Saturn, Mars and Venus. One year I recieved a telescope as a Christmas present. Now Venus showed phases, Jupiter had bands, and best of all Saturn had its beautiful rings. This was at the same time the Voyager spacecraft were visiting Jupiter and Saturn.
The telescope also showed me that there were many stars I could not see with my eyes. The idea that there was so much beyond my perception fascinated me. Many years later when I was beginning my professional career in Astronomy I had my first observing run at the Kitt Peak National Observatory in Arizona. It was there that I first experienced truely dark skies. While the night skies of my youth were beautiful enough to lead me to a career in Astronomy, there I saw how impressive that a truly dark sky very sky could be.
