Episode 10:Prof.

AWAKENING OF A STARCHILD. /
When I think back to that farmhouse in Switzerland, where my family spent our holidays in the nineteen-sixties, I remember how close and comforting everything felt—wooden walls, creaking floors, the soft scent of hay drifting in from the barn. And yet, even then, my imagination reached far beyond those walls.

As a child, I spent hours reading—stories of explorers crossing vast oceans, and science fiction tales of distant worlds, silent spacecraft, and the unfolding drama of the space race. The universe fascinated me, but it remained something distant, something that belonged more to imagination than to lived experience.

My parents, meanwhile, gave me and my brother a love for the mountains. We hiked often, sometimes climbing higher than we thought we could. One evening, returning from a summit, we approached the farmhouse as the Engadin valley settled into silence. I remember how time seemed to slow, as if the mountains themselves were gently holding the day in place. The air was cool, touched with grass and wood, and the last light had already slipped behind the peaks.

At first, the sky seemed almost empty.
Then, gradually, the stars began to appear.
Not all at once, but quietly—one, then another—until the sky unfolded above us. I looked up without speaking. The Milky Way stretched across the darkness, clear and luminous, like a distant river of light.
In that moment, something shifted.

The universe I had read about was no longer far away. It was present, calm, and immeasurably vast. Standing beside my parents, I felt a quiet connection—to them, to the mountains, and to the endless sky above.
Even now, I think of that night not as a discovery, but as an awakening—when imagination and reality met, and simply became one.
